Mantra Chanting Rules (Do’s and Don’ts)

Simple rules that maximize focus, consistency, and results — without making the practice heavy.

The goal of rules is not to create fear. The goal is to make your practice repeatable every day. A few simple guidelines help you avoid common mistakes and build a habit that can run for decades.

The 10 core rules (beginner-friendly)

  1. Pick one mantra and commit for 21–40 days before switching.
  2. Fix a time daily. Morning is best; evening is also fine.
  3. Cleanliness: bath if possible; otherwise wash hands/face/feet.
  4. Posture: sit stable, spine straight, relaxed shoulders.
  5. Breath: keep it slow and natural; don’t strain.
  6. Pronunciation: do your best; improve gradually.
  7. Attention: when distracted, return without self-attack.
  8. Count: 108 is traditional, but time-based practice also works.
  9. Intention (sankalpa): keep it pure — peace, clarity, strength.
  10. End calmly: sit for 30–60 seconds in silence.

Can I chant at night?

Is 108 mandatory?

No. Start with 27 or 54, or chant for 5–10 minutes. Grow gradually.
